Not Celtic

So I've been to Ireland, been surrounded by soft grey stones and silver sea, so you'd think , wouldn't you , that my work might reflect that?
I sat down at my sewing machine with a bit of patterned felt which I'd used as a sample piece in a class before I went.
I just wanted to limber up, to exercise my stitch muscle.
But it turned into a full blown routine.
Number one:

Number two:

Getting larger -Number three:

and finally: Number four:

Don't ask me....

I have no idea...

have you?

Could you please enlighten me?

I don't know what to do about them.

But they made me smile.

At about 6 inches long, too big for brooches (but you may think differently)too small for wall hangings.
But such fun.

(Well whatever they are number1 and 4 are sold !)

They are very cool I would frame them (shadow box).

Awww these are gorgeous, Jackie - so distinctive, quirky and fun... can still see your distinctive jewel-bright colours peeping though those muted shades though. Wonderful!
I agree with Mary, a shadow box would suit them perfectly.

These are absolutely wonderful!! Could you put them on canvases like the others?

connie said...

I like the shadow box idea but then I was also thinking they would be lovely stitched on a lovely wool cardigan maybe on the cuff or on the lower edge along the edge of the buttons (don't know how to describe this accurately) But I think they would be lovely sewn on a simple garment...

Whatever they are they are rather lovely!
p.s. word verification is "wings"... perhaps that is what they are?

make denim bag from a pair of old jeans and embellish them with these lovely creations? I would want to wear them with pride, you are very clever.

beautiful! Bag clasps??? Purse fronts?? I am going to contact you soon, just hiding away slightly with my thoughts. xxx

I agree with maggi.
My initial thought was to vaguely attach them under each other and have one long hanging.
But, I also like Karen's idea of a bag clasp!
You are so clever Jackie. x

Oooooh I like the comment about bag clasps - they would look great on the front of a simple Haris tweed handbag. Or group them together on a canvas.

They would look gorgeous framed!

I think they are brilliant - would love to see how you create them - do you plan or do they happen? All four together in a frame would look good!

... and truly scrumptious!

They are so beautiful, and very you with a hint of Celtic in there. Like Maggi, I could see illuminated letters. At 6" they might be too big for brooches, but could perhaps decorate bags. I also like the shadow box idea. Your Irish holiday has obviously inspired you even if you didn't know it.

Number one said Seahorse to me and number 4 said exotic bird (or was that number 3?) They are great fun and would look wonderful on a bag or jacket.

Grangry said...

Jackie, I can see a celtic influence here. I agree with Maggi, some remind me of illuminated letters too. And number 2 is definitely Irish! Whatever, I think they are fabulous and I love the colours.

They would be great appliques for tote bags, journal covers, boxes......all kinds of things!

They're great! Love the colours and shapes. Lesley

They are almost edible, so gorgeous are they. They are so very 'you'. As always, great work. x

Oh yes, I was going to say my fav was #4! Really do like it. They could maybe be used as embellishments on jeans, jackets or bags???
They are just lovely Jackie!
ok, so I've just read the other comments and the bag idea has already been touted. Must be a great idea then! lol. x

Stunning! All of the ideas on how to use them would be great. Look forward to seeing what you do.

(And I'm glad you had a good time in Ireland! ... I've been lurking.)

they are so stunning and DECIDEDLY Celtic looking in both form and color... think "Book of Kells" and other illuminated manuscripts from the 8th and 9th centuries...

I love them, that last photo of them all together almost looks as though it spells something. They definitely have a Celtic feel to them.

They make me smile!!!

I think they're brilliant, and the colours do reflect your holiday to Ireland - the sea and the woods that you walked in.
I think they would look lovely with very simple frames, all the same size, lined up or down a wall. Very funky and eye catching.

I think they are beautiful works of art in their own right ........ would even look lovely framed together hadn't you sold one!

Hi Jackie
These are really lovely! Lurve the colours!
Framing (as per Mary's shadow box suggestion) or Mrs Yappy Dog's suggestion of a denim bag are both brilliant ideas!
I so envy your skills!

FABULOUS Jackie, whatever they are - and my personal instinct is that these are the misty colours of the landscape you've been in?? Don't see why the shapes don't fit that either, and they're beautiful. I so WISH I could make wonderful things like this!

My imagination told me these were letters...your version of the illuminated caps you find in ancient texts but playful, not all churchy.

I see my "D"!

NECKLACES! Ass chains. Look at Anthropologie. These are wonderful.

How about incorporating them into journal covers? Or on bags? I'd frame them of course because I'd be so afraid something would ruin them!

Jude said...

Course they'll sell...they are lovely!!
I agree with Mary..put them in frames x

I happen to love embellished denim jackets and jeans and these would work wonderfully for that! But there is a great myriad of ideas here!

These are fantastic Jackie. Did you sketch the designs first, or did they simply evolve? I love them all and they would look great framed. What a gift you have!

Jackie said...

I'm afraid I didn't sketch them at all which makes me wonder if it could be classed as art in any way or is it just doodling?
Ho hum.

Thanks everyone for your twopennorth. Its very intersting to see what people think.

They'd look great on a clutch bag.

Yes, definitely illuminated letters spring to mind - and even the shape of the Irish coast - lots of little inlets ????

What an eyecandy to discover - an amazing blog and amazing work, so beautiful.
My last Ireland trip was some years ago but I felt in love with the colors of nature - all that colors you have used in your pieces here. And I can even hear the Irish music looking to your work.
If they where a little bit smaller I would have loved to see them in a gorgeous jewelry piece together with glass beads ☺.
I would choose to put them on a canvas and attach them in a sort of magical forest. A sort of mixed media acryl painting in muted colors.
Great work - whatever your decision will be.
Hugs
Manuela

Your trip to Ireland certainly inspired you. There is something very special about them.

Ester Kiely said...

Definitely a celtic influence here and I agree they are like illuminated letters.....weren't those also 'doodles' for those monks?
Anyway they are lovely as are all your photos of your trip to Ireland! Glad you enjoyed your visit to this part of the world!

I love the way your work evolves - I am sure you will have found homes for each new piece by now. They do look like they are spelling something out.
